S&P 500 growth is driven mainly by AI company stocks in the US — CNBC Top News

In the United States, the growth of the S&P 500 since September 10 has been narrow and driven mainly by shares of companies linked to artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, stocks declined on Monday amid rising oil prices and US government bond yields, CNBC Top News reports.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds reached a new high of 5.27%, extending the bond market sell-off from the previous week. Bond prices move inversely to their yields. WTI oil briefly recovered to $95 per barrel after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Narrow market growth

Over this period, the S&P 500 gained about 1%, but the increase was concentrated mainly in AI company stocks. Cyclical companies, banks, and shares of businesses dependent on consumers’ discretionary spending posted weaker results.

Goldman Sachs strategists noted that the median stock in the S&P 500 is trading 16% below its 52-week high, while market breadth has fallen to its lowest level since the dot-com bubble. In their view, weak market breadth and low investor positioning could help recently lagging stocks recover if macroeconomic uncertainty declines.

The authors of CNBC Investing Club believe that lower oil prices and Treasury yields could support broader market growth. At the same time, they noted that it is difficult to determine when these macroeconomic factors will ease.

Justice Department closes CrowdStrike investigation

The US Department of Justice closed its investigation into CrowdStrike’s dealings with Carahsoft Technology without further action, Bloomberg News reported, as cited by CNBC. Carahsoft Technology is a distributor of enterprise software for government agencies.

Questions about these dealings were first raised in October 2024 and resurfaced in June 2025 after the company filed a document with a regulator stating that it was cooperating with government requests. CrowdStrike shares rose from $75 in October 2024 to $259 on Monday. According to CNBC, the company benefits from a long-term increase in corporate cybersecurity spending and demand for protection against artificial intelligence-related threats.
