Pennsylvania reports fourth measles-related death in a month

Authorities in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania have reported the fourth death related to measles over the past month. An unvaccinated 18-year-old resident of Mifflin County in the central part of the state died, STAT News reports, citing the Associated Press.

Cause of death

The Mifflin County coroner's office reported the case in a Facebook post. According to its information, the cause of death was acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare and severe neurological complication of measles.

The report does not provide other circumstances surrounding the death of the 18-year-old Mifflin County resident. At the same time, this case became the fourth recorded death in the state linked to measles over the past month.

Other cases

On Saturday, a 40-year-old woman from Jefferson County in western Pennsylvania died from measles complications. STAT News describes the county as a rural area.

Last month, two infants infected with measles died in Lancaster County in the southeastern part of the state. Deaths were recorded in central, western, and southeastern Pennsylvania.
