Ghana develops $100 million Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Cancer Centre
In Kwaso in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, ADB Ghana Medical Systems Group Limited is leading the engineering and infrastructure component of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Excellence project. The total cost of the five-year project is estimated at $100 million, MyJoyOnline reports.
The centre is being developed on a 52-acre site in the Ejisu Municipality. It was named after Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Funding for the project is provided by Breast Care International, Peace and Love Hospitals, Global Health Catalyst and the University of Pennsylvania.
First phase of the project
The cost of the first phase is estimated at approximately $10 million. It includes a radiotherapy complex, a research wing, an artificial intelligence centre, an education centre and facilities for community engagement.
Beatrice Wiafe Addai, president of Breast Care International and founder of the centre, said the facility is intended to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to provide advanced cancer care and promote medical tourism. According to her, the centre is also intended to reduce the need for patients from Africa to travel to other continents for treatment.

Planned capabilities of the centre
Once construction is completed, the cancer centre is expected to create more than 250 jobs. It is set to include chemotherapy and brachytherapy units, computed tomography simulators, inpatient wards, laboratories, operating theatres and recovery rooms.
The project is intended to combine treatment, research, training and community engagement in one specialized facility. ADB Ghana Medical Systems, founded in 2006 by Addan Benjamin Dias, has expanded its operations from supplying medical equipment to planning, construction, maintenance and management of hospital infrastructure.
The company is also involved in establishing a specialized cardiology facility at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. According to MyJoyOnline, the new facility is intended to bring specialized cardiac services closer to patients in the Ashanti Region and neighboring areas.
