Medicare to expand pilot model for technology support in chronic diseases
The Medicare ACCESS pilot model, under which approved companies are paid for technology assistance in managing chronic diseases, will be expanded. Regulators announced that new tracks will begin operating in spring 2027, STAT News reports.
New ACCESS tracks
ACCESS will add separate tracks for substance use disorders, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and tobacco use. The model will also provide longer-term support for musculoskeletal conditions.

Payment for results
ACCESS was announced last year. It currently covers, among other conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic musculoskeletal pain, and depression. The model uses outcome-linked payments: providers receive more funding if their patients' conditions improve.
Regulators also published a catalog of 39 providers that can deliver services to Medicare beneficiaries under ACCESS. According to STAT News, the experiment only recently began, but officials have already decided to expand the list of conditions covered by the model.
