CenterPoint Energy reports customer data breach in the United States

American energy company CenterPoint Energy reported that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information of some of its customers through one of its external systems. The company disclosed information about the incident in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Incident details

As Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters, the company learned in September about an online post. Its author claimed to have obtained a dataset containing certain customer information.

After that, the Texas-based company activated its cyber incident response protocols, engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists, and took additional measures to protect its systems. As a result of the investigation, CenterPoint Energy determined that a third party had obtained personal data related to some customers without authorization.

Service operations

CenterPoint Energy said the incident did not affect its electricity and gas supply services: they remain operational. The company also does not believe that the incident is reasonably likely to have a material impact on its financial condition or results of operations.

The company has already incurred costs related to the incident and its response and expects further costs. At the same time, it has cyber risk insurance and believes it will help cover the related expenses.
