Ghanaian minister orders rural telephony sites upgraded to 4G
Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has ordered all rural telephony sites in the country to be upgraded to at least the 4G standard. He made the statement during an inspection of rural telephony projects in the Eastern Region, MyJoyOnline reports.
Minimum 4G standard
According to the minister, the country can no longer provide rural communities with only 2G and 3G connectivity while newer technologies, including 5G and 6G, are developing around the world. He noted that the upgrade should improve the quality of mobile services and user experience, as well as help reduce network congestion.
George stressed that rural communities should be provided with at least access to 4G. He also stated that existing rural telephony infrastructure needs to be modernized so that residents of such communities are not left out of Ghana’s digital transformation.

Infrastructure investment
The minister believes that telecommunications infrastructure should receive the same attention as roads and hospitals. According to him, the state must decide to move all rural telephony sites to the minimum 4G standard and prepare them for 5G.
George added that this initiative is part of broader efforts to narrow the digital divide and provide communities across Ghana with faster and more reliable telecommunications services.
