The NBU has disclosed the number of counterfeit hryvnias in circulation
By the end of 2025, the rate of counterfeit money in Ukraine had fallen to 1.7 counterfeit notes per 1 million genuine banknotes. This indicates a high level of security for the national currency, especially when compared to the Eurozone, where there are approximately 15 counterfeit euros per million genuine banknotes.
This was announced by National Bank Governor Andriy Pyshnyy during the release of the cash market monitoring results, according to RBC-Ukraine.
Most often, counterfeiters target 500-hryvnia banknotes of the old design, issued prior to 2014–2015. Volodymyr Baglai, Director General of the Banknote and Coin Mint, emphasized that the new series of hryvnia banknotes feature a significantly higher level of security, which is why the number of counterfeits has decreased dramatically following the redesign. Statistics show significant fluctuations in the past: in 2021, there were 7 counterfeits per million; in 2023, 2.1; and in 2024, this figure stood at 5.1.
Currently, there are 2.6 billion banknotes in circulation in the country with a total value of 913 billion hryvnias, as well as 15.2 billion coins worth 9.6 billion hryvnias. This is approximately 3 billion hryvnias less than at the beginning of the year.
The National Police have concluded their investigation into a group of foreign nationals who organized a channel for the supply and sale of counterfeit U.S. currency.
