Beijing increases electric vehicle quotas by 80,000 in 2026

Beijing authorities will issue an additional 80,000 quotas for purchasing new energy vehicles in 2026 to support the declining market. The total number of quotas in the Chinese capital will rise to 180,000.

Of the additional quotas, 60,000 will be allocated to families without cars, and 20,000 to other applicants. The quota distribution will take place on 26 May. These quotas apply only to fully electric vehicles and exclude plug-in hybrids or range-extended hybrids. Since 2011, the city has had a lottery system limiting car purchases to combat traffic congestion and air pollution.

In January 2026, retail sales of passenger cars in China fell by 14% year-on-year to 1.5 million.
