Target has appointed its first director of artificial intelligence
Retailer Target has appointed Chandu Nair as the company’s first-ever chief artificial intelligence officer. He will also serve as senior vice president. Target announced the appointment on August 11, according to CNBC.
Prior to joining Target, Nair was a senior vice president at Lowe’s, where he was responsible for stores, data, artificial intelligence, and innovation. He previously worked at Staples and Gap. Along with his appointment, Target announced the appointment of Purvi Shah as Senior Vice President of User Experience.
Nair stated that the company aims to apply artificial intelligence in a more coordinated manner. Among the areas he cited were improving inventory management and accelerating business decision-making. According to him, the practical value of AI should be reflected in simplifying the shopping experience for customers, providing better tools for employees, and bringing new ideas to market faster.

Target is already investing in generative artificial intelligence. Specifically, the company uses a tool called Target Trend Brain, which helps identify styles, colors, and materials that may interest shoppers. During the last holiday season, the retailer also launched a conversational AI service to help customers choose gifts.
Other major retailers are also integrating AI into their strategies. Walmart is implementing relevant tools and agents in its stores and supply chains; Gap announced a partnership with Google Gemini this year; and Best Buy is collaborating with OpenAI and Google.
