Volkswagen returns to military production in partnership with Israeli firm
German automotive giant Volkswagen plans to revive military equipment production in cooperation with the Israeli company Rafael. According to Financial Times, this move echoes the historical period during Adolf Hitler's regime when Volkswagen manufactured military vehicles and the V1 rocket for the Wehrmacht.
Volkswagen and Rafael aim to retrofit a factory in Osnabrück, Germany, to produce components for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. This partnership prompts reconsideration of the company’s role in modern global military cooperation.
Volkswagen Group includes ten leading automotive brands from across Europe: Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, CUPRA, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and motorcycle manufacturer Ducati. The group also produces commercial vehicles under brands like Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania, and MAN.
Volkswagen has long been associated with automotive innovation, but now the company is re-entering the military sphere, generating mixed reactions from customers and the wider public. Some consumers have already called for a boycott of the brand in response to this collaboration.
This agreement marks a new phase in the relationship between European corporations and the Israeli defense industry, with significant implications for the future of defense technology manufacturing in Europe.
