Alberta prepares to launch regulated online casino market in spring–summer

The Canadian province of Alberta plans to officially open a regulated online gambling market this spring or summer. Interim CEO of Alberta iGaming Corporation, Dan Kean, announced that Alberta will become the second province after Ontario, which launched its regulated market in 2022. This is significant as approximately 70% of online gambling in Alberta currently occurs through illegal offshore platforms.

Major operators are already preparing to enter the new market: FanDuel intends to invest around $70 million, PENN Entertainment between $15 and $20 million. Rush Street Interactive expects the market to open by the end of the second quarter, while BetMGM and DraftKings have already included Alberta in their 2026 financial forecasts.

This move is expected to reduce illegal gambling significantly in the area and attract substantial investments. Going forward, the legal iGaming segment in Alberta is likely to grow rapidly, revitalizing the gambling market.
