Brazilian football clubs face millions in losses due to betting advertising ban

The Brazilian Senate is considering a bill that would fully prohibit betting advertising across the country. Should the legislation pass, Serie A football clubs could lose more than 842 million Brazilian reals, equivalent to around 142 million US dollars. This would significantly affect their financial stability.

Currently, approximately 60% of top-division Brazilian football clubs have sponsorship agreements with gambling companies, with betting advertising dominating football jerseys. Clubs such as Flamengo, Palmeiras, Corinthians, Botafogo, and others are involved. Industry experts have warned of an impending crisis: in 2025, ten clubs signed a manifesto stating that a full ban on betting advertising could result in annual losses of 1.6 billion reals (around 269 million US dollars) for the entire sports industry.

The bill could fundamentally alter the financial landscape of Brazilian football and affect sponsorship relations in sport, forcing clubs to seek new revenue sources.
