Why Did Brian Johnson's Experiment Fail, and What Actually Keeps You Young: A Cosmetic Doctor at LEO BEAUTY CLUB in Kyiv Explains

American millionaire Brian Johnson, known for his obsession with rejuvenation and biological immortality, was recently diagnosed with incurable autoimmune gastritis.  And this despite the fact that the 48-year-old biohacker spends nearly $2 million every year fighting his own aging, and his comprehensive monthly medical checkup includes several thousand metrics. The millionaire is constantly accompanied by a team of doctors, nutritionists, and personal chefs.

What’s wrong with Brian Johnson’s rejuvenation project, and how can one realistically maintain youth and health without spending millions of dollars on it? we asked Fatima Abdulkhayrova, a leading cosmetic doctor at LEO BEAUTY CLUB in Kyiv. Here’s what she had to say.

On Brian Johnson’s rejuvenation concept

In my opinion, this is a fundamentally flawed view of one’s own body. Brian Johnson wasn’t just avoiding illness—he was terrified of aging. A panic-stricken fear of aging and death can trigger certain physical processes in the body. After all, it’s not normal to try to turn back nature and time.

Our cells have a limited capacity to divide. Once this capacity is exhausted, the cells can no longer function—they die. We all know stories of long-lived people. For example, in Tibet, people used to live to be 120 years old. After their deaths, autopsies were performed, and the diagnosis was often “death from old age.” This means that people may simply die because the natural cycle of cell division has come to an end.

In fact, I don’t think Brian Johnson’s experiment will be successful. I doubt he’ll physically live to see 2140, as he plans to.

Brian Johnson takes his health very seriously. Several doctors live with him full-time, regularly monitoring his health and constantly measuring the level of aging not only of his entire body but also of each individual organ. A special regimen and diet have been developed for him.

It looks like an experiment. In reality, a person cannot live at such a pace. This is not a life that brings joy. It is a life lived merely for the sake of existence. I do not consider this normal.

The Hype Around Rejuvenation and the Irony of Life

In my view, hype is sometimes being artificially created and “hyped up” around popular trends such as biohacking. “Munjaro,” “Ozempic,” and “Biopatid” are already commonplace on the market. Everyone knows about them. You can’t surprise anyone with this anymore. On top of that, there are countless so-called “generics” that people buy on their own and haphazardly on the gray market, since such products are usually not officially imported into Ukraine or other countries. They are not recognized as medical drugs, unlike the well-known “No-Spa,” “Dimedrol,” or “Aspirin,” which have undergone numerous studies. It’s important to remember that there are special studies—randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled—designed to test medications.

The alternative to this is regularly maintaining your health, undergoing checkups, and participating in preventive medical examinations. Although this may sound old-fashioned, such preventive examinations are the foundation of good health. You should have basic tests done annually, such as complete blood and urine tests, as well as ultrasounds of the thyroid gland, abdominal organs, uterus, ovaries, and breasts for women (men should have their prostate checked regularly).

Starting at age 40, it’s recommended to undergo a colonoscopy and gastroscopy every three years to detect potential diseases. If a person undergoes these screenings regularly and has no complaints about their health, the question arises: why do they need additional peptides or biohacking if they are physically healthy and full of energy?

The fact is that Brian Johnson had chronically low ferritin levels for years. And a whole team of doctors couldn’t find the cause. The irony is that the cause was found through a routine test—a biopsy of the stomach lining. In other words, he had extremely complex health regimens and underwent constant testing, but his condition was detected using a routine, basic method available at any hospital. That is precisely where the irony lies.

How to Stay Younger for Longer

If you’re interested in rejuvenation, the first and best thing you can do for yourself is to exercise—for free and without the help of doctors. Among physical activities, swimming is particularly beneficial. It’s easy on the joints, works all muscle groups, and helps the heart pump blood and improve overall health.

Second is getting a regular annual checkup. This should be the foundation. I believe this is more about maintaining health and monitoring your condition than taking any dietary supplements. First, we get tested, identify any potential deficiencies, and then take the appropriate supplements based on those results. In other words, we don’t just start taking vitamin D for no reason simply because most people do. First, we get tested and determine the appropriate dosage.

By the way, Brian Johnson used to take—and still takes—about a hundred dietary supplements a day. And it’s well known—and confirmed by doctors—that there’s a condition caused by excessive consumption of such supplements. This condition is called “toxic hepatosis” and occurs when you poison your liver with supplements just as you would with regular medications.

Comprehensive Support from LEO BEAUTY CLUB Experts

Step 1: You consult your primary care physician or an endocrinologist at LBC. They will order a series of tests. Then, our ultrasound specialists will thoroughly examine you and compile a complete medical history. Based on your symptoms, we’ll refer you to relevant specialists or offer further assistance.

Everything should proceed step by step: the first step is the general practitioner, the second is the endocrinologist, who reviews the test results, ultrasound scans, and other examinations. After that, we can have a substantive discussion about your health, since no one understands our bodies as well as a general practitioner and an endocrinologist. For women, a gynecologist is a must on this list. At LBC, the gynecologist typically also serves as an endocrinologist. This whole concept of biohacking and improving quality of life revolves around these very specialists.
