Gianmarco Tamberi wins Diamond League event in Silesia
Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi won the Diamond League event in Silesia, clearing 2.31 metres in the city square in Katowice. The 34-year-old athlete continued his successful performances after winning his fourth European Championship gold.
Battle with Beckford
According to Channel NewsAsia, citing Reuters, Tamberi competed with Jamaican Romain Beckford for the victory. Both athletes cleared 2.29 metres on their third attempt.
After the bar was raised by another two centimetres, Beckford failed to clear it on his final attempt. Tamberi had already secured victory with one fewer failed attempt, and then cleared 2.31 metres.

Rain during attempts at 2.35 metres
During the competition, the Italian prepared for his jumps in different ways: sometimes asking the crowd to support him with applause, sometimes choosing silence, and also using music ranging from classical to techno. Tamberi told TVP Sports that the atmosphere and support of Polish fans gave him additional motivation.
After his victory, he attempted to clear 2.35 metres but failed to take the height in three attempts. According to the athlete, it started raining at that moment, the surface became slippery, and he did not want to risk an injury. Earlier this season, Tamberi cleared 2.32 metres and won European Championship gold.
Other results
In the women's long jump, Alyssa Jones, who won the US Championships in July, claimed victory. On her sixth and final attempt, she recorded 6.98 metres, matching Agate de Sousa's result. The main part of the competition was due to continue on Sunday at the Silesian Stadium, where Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen was set to run the 1,500 metres for the first time in nearly a year against Olympic champion Cole Hocker.
