Gennaro Gattuso has stepped down as head coach of the Italian national team

Former legendary midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has officially stepped down from his role with the Italian national team.

According to the Italian Football Federation, the parties have reached an agreement to terminate the contract by mutual consent.

The main reason for this decision was the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which was a real tragedy for Italian fans.

Gattuso took over the national team last June with a clear mission: to lead the team to the World Cup after a series of previous failures.

Despite the fiasco in the qualifying playoffs, the federation initially had no plans to dismiss the coach, offering him the chance to continue his work.

However, the coach himself decided to invoke a clause in his contract and step down without making any financial claims against the organization.

The situation for Italian soccer looks critical, as the national team is missing the World Cup for the third time in a row.

The last major global tournament for the Italians was the 2014 World Cup, where the team failed to advance past the group stage.

Under Gattuso’s leadership, the “Squadra Azzurra” was unable to break this “losing streak,” forcing the leadership to seek new paths forward.

Currently, the Italian press is already actively discussing candidates for the vacant position of national team head coach. Among the favorites are experienced tacticians: Antonio Conte, Massimiliano Allegri, and Roberto Mancini.

Each of them has significant experience winning top-tier championships and could be the savior who brings Italy back to the elite of world soccer.

Gennaro Gattuso has achieved cult status throughout his career, particularly as a Milan player and 2006 World Cup champion. As a coach, he has worked in many countries, including Spain, France, and Croatia, winning the Italian Cup with Napoli.

However, working with the national team proved to be a serious challenge for him, ending in a painful parting of ways due to a lack of results on the international stage.

As a reminder, Mircea Lucescu suffered two heart attacks in one day.

Additionally, the International Federation of Sport Climbing (World Climbing) has designated a number of Russian athletes as neutral, including members of the Russian Armed Forces and competitors in the occupied Crimea.

2022 Olympic champion Victoria Karl received an 18-month suspension for violating anti-doping rules. The German athlete missed the 2026 Olympics and will not be able to compete until the end of November 2026.
