Fagan calls North Melbourne’s public explanation of Clarkson unfair

Brisbane Lions head coach Chris Fagan called North Melbourne’s public explanation of Alastair Clarkson’s dismissal as team coach unfair. Clarkson was dismissed a year before the end of his contract by club president Sonja Hood and football director Todd Viney.

According to ABC News Australia, Fagan was shocked by the club’s decision. He expressed hope that the critical remarks voiced by North Melbourne’s leadership at the press conference had previously been conveyed to Clarkson personally and that he had had an opportunity to respond to them.

Chris Fagan’s reaction

Fagan described the press conference as quite harsh and said that the way Clarkson was spoken about there was, in his view, an unfair portrayal of a person who has done much for Australian football.

The Brisbane coach also noted that North Melbourne had begun to make progress under Clarkson. According to Fagan, the dismissal was a reminder of how difficult the coaching profession is, even for one of the most successful coaches in the sport.

The club leadership’s position

Sonja Hood said the club needed a coach who could work with the modern game and best meet the team’s needs. At the same time, she stressed that appointing Clarkson in August 2022 had not been a mistake.

Todd Viney said significant gaps remained in the team’s game plan. According to him, efforts to address them led to more meetings and more information, which left the footballers more confused. Club leaders also said that when views were gathered within the organisation, including among players, it became clear that Clarkson no longer had sufficient support as a coach capable of taking the team forward.

In the 2026 season, North Melbourne finished 14th and recorded nine wins. Clarkson coached Hawthorn from 2005 to 2021 and won four premiership titles with the club. North Melbourne is expected to begin its search for a new head coach next week.
