The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has ruled on the French national team’s appeal regarding the yellow card shown to midfielder Michael Olise. The organization rejected the team’s appeal and upheld the penalty.
The French side contested the caution received by one of the “Les Bleus’” key players during the World Cup. However, FIFA found no grounds to rescind the card.
The midfielder received the yellow card in the World Cup round of 16. The referee cautioned Olise following a clash with Paraguayan midfielder Matías Galarza. Galarza fell to the ground during the altercation, even though the French player had merely put a finger to his lips.
“The situation with the yellow card hasn’t changed. We received notification from FIFA this morning,” said French national team head coach Didier Deschamps.
The French Football Federation attempted to appeal Olise’s yellow card, fearing they would lose the midfielder for the World Cup’s decisive matches. If he receives a caution in the World Cup quarterfinal against Morocco, he will miss the tournament’s semifinal. So far, the midfielder has five assists in five matches at the 2026 World Cup.
2026 World Cup Quarterfinal Matchups
The round will kick off on July 9. The first match will be between France and Morocco. The final semifinalist will be determined on the night of Sunday, July 12.
The Colombian national team became the last team to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, defeating Switzerland in a penalty shootout. Neither regulation nor extra time produced a winner, so the fate of the spot in the next round was decided by penalty kicks.
Brazil’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup following a 1–2 loss to Norway in the round of 16 was met with intense emotions in the locker room. According to Brazilian media reports, Neymar, with tears in his eyes, addressed his teammates and the coaching staff, thanking everyone for the journey they had shared.
