Finland crushed the U.S. at the 2026 World Hockey Championship

The Finnish national hockey team secured a convincing victory over the reigning world champions—the U.S. team—in a third-round match of the group stage at the 2026 World Championship, currently being held in Switzerland.

The game ended with a sensational 6-2 rout of the Americans.

This result significantly shifted the balance of power in Group A and intensified the battle for a spot in the playoffs.

The U.S. team arrived at the tournament as the clear favorite, having won gold medals at the previous 2025 championship and at the February 2026 Olympic Games.

However, the Finns, who are Olympic bronze medalists, managed to completely neutralize their opponent’s offensive potential.

Although the U.S. outshot Finland (32-28), the Finnish team demonstrated much greater efficiency in capitalizing on their scoring opportunities.

The game began with Finland scoring a goal just six minutes into the first period.

Overall, during the opening twenty minutes, the Finnish players secured a comfortable lead, scoring three goals against their opponents’ single reply.

The key stretch of the game came at the start of the second period, when the Finns scored twice in a row against the U.S., extending their lead to a crushing 5-1.

After conceding the fifth goal, the U.S. coaching staff made a goalie change: Devin Cooley replaced Joseph Wall on the ice.

In the final period, the teams exchanged goals during power plays, sealing Finland’s final victory with a score of 6–2 (3–1, 2–0, 1–1).

For the U.S. national team, this defeat marked their second loss of the tournament, as the reigning world champions had previously lost to the host team, Switzerland, 1-3 in the first round.

After three rounds, the Finnish national team has earned a maximum nine points and stands alone at the top of Group A’s standings.

The reigning world champions, with three points to their credit, are currently in fifth place.

This leaves the star-studded U.S. team outside the quarterfinal qualification zone, where the four strongest teams from the group of eight advance.
