Greek Football Federation opposes Infantino’s new bid for FIFA president

In Greece, Greek Football Federation President Makis Gagatsis stated that the organization opposes FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s new nomination. He voiced the federation’s position in Thessaloniki after a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee.

As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, Gagatsis said that the Greek federation had withdrawn its support for Infantino. According to him, things unacceptable to the football community took place at the World Cup, and the federation also disagreed with the program to sell a commercial stake in the World Cup to private investors.

Criticism of FIFA’s plan

Pressure on Infantino intensified after his proposal to sell a commercial stake in the World Cup to private investors. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF opposed the plan.

FIFA later abandoned the proposal and apologized to member associations for the mistakes made. At the same time, after a crisis meeting in Morocco in August, the organization’s leadership confirmed its support for Infantino.

Search for a candidate

Former Germany national team director Oliver Bierhoff supported UEFA’s calls for a change in FIFA leadership. He stated that football is already commercial, but belongs to the entire football community, and that events of recent weeks and months have undermined confidence in the right direction of its development.

Infantino plans to run for re-election in March. His critics have until mid-November to name an alternative candidate, but there is no clear favorite yet. UEFA Executive Committee member and head of Danish football Jesper Møller said he would continue searching for a candidate capable of winning a majority.
