Ibrahimović is pushing for Xavi to become Milan's coach
Major changes are brewing in the coaching staff at AC Milan, and former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the head coaching position; according to media reports, Zlatan Ibrahimović is actively promoting him. The idea is to bring in a coach with a modern, attacking style of play following the team’s disappointing season. This is reported by Corriere dello Sport.
Xavi Hernández has become one of the key options for the Rossoneri’s management following Massimiliano Allegri’s departure. It is Ibrahimović, who serves as an advisor to the club’s owners, who is one of the driving forces behind the potential appointment of the Spaniard. The club is considering the idea of bringing in a coach with a dynamic attacking philosophy, looking to examples from other Serie A teams, particularly Cesc Fàbregas’s Como, which is considered a symbol of the new generation of coaches.
Xavi has been out of work since the summer of 2024, when he left Barcelona after three seasons at the helm of the Catalan club. Prior to that, he also worked with Qatar’s Al-Sadd, where he began his coaching career after retiring as a player.
As a player, he spent legendary years at Barcelona, winning numerous trophies with the club, including eight La Liga titles and four Champions League victories. He also won two European Championships and a World Cup as a member of the Spanish national team.
The 2025/26 season proved to be an inconsistent one for Milan: the team fought for a spot in the Champions League but ultimately finished the season in fifth place and qualified for the Europa League. The results in the Italian Cup and Super Cup were also disappointing, which prompted the club’s management to look for a new head coach.
There is currently no official decision regarding Xavi’s appointment, but his candidacy is being actively discussed within the club, and according to media reports, Ibrahimović’s role in this process could be key. Milan is eager to quickly finalize the appointment of a new head coach in order to prepare the team for the new season and return it to the fight for the top spots in Italy and Europe.
