Kimi Antonelli wins Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix after starting 19th

Italian Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won his home Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza after starting from 19th place. The 20-year-old championship leader became the first Italian to win at the Monza circuit since 1966, when Ludovico Scarfiotti took victory for Ferrari.

Starting from 19th place

Antonelli started the race from 19th position after receiving an engine penalty. After 13 rounds of the season, he extended his lead in the overall standings over his Mercedes teammate George Russell from 59 to 66 points.

Russell finished second. The Briton led the race after a restart that took place following a heavy crash involving Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc at the end of the second lap.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull took third place. Russell had hoped to reduce his deficit to Antonelli in the championship because of the Italian's penalty, but his teammate claimed victory.
