Cyprus wins record 18 medals at Mediterranean Games

Cyprus concluded its participation in the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026” with 18 medals — seven gold, six silver and five bronze. This is the country’s most successful result in its entire history of participation in the competition, Cyprus Mail reports.

The medal haul surpassed Cyprus’ previous best result at the Mediterranean Games. The Cypriot delegation included a record 145 athletes competing in 24 sports.

Marios Georgiou’s medals

On the final day of Cyprus’ participation, Marios Georgiou won gold in the horizontal bar event and silver in the parallel bars event. Neofytos Kyriacou won a bronze medal in the horizontal bar event.

According to the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Georgiou has nine Mediterranean Games medals and is the most decorated Cypriot athlete in the history of these competitions. His four gold medals also made him the first athlete from Cyprus to achieve this mark at the Games.

Closing ceremony in Taranto

The Mediterranean Games lasted 10 days and brought together more than 4,000 athletes from 26 countries. The closing ceremony, titled Mediterraneo in Festa, was held at Erasmo Iacovone Stadium in Taranto, which also hosted the opening ceremony.

Rockin’1000 performed at the event: according to the organizers, 260 musicians formed a Mediterranean orchestra and performed a one-hour program of famous rock compositions. The ceremony also featured the Orchestra of Magna Grecia, artists and musical groups from Apulia. The Mediterranean Games flag was officially handed over to Kosovo, which will host the next tournament.
