Conor McGregor underwent surgery after suffering a serious knee injury

Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor has successfully undergone knee surgery following a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) he sustained in his bout against Max Holloway at UFC 329.

The athlete plans to return to the Octagon within a year. According to preliminary reports, his potential comeback could take place during UFC International Fight Week in 2027.

Conor McGregor announced that he had successfully undergone knee surgery following the injury he sustained in his fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329. The fighter has begun his recovery and plans to return to the Octagon.

On Wednesday, the former two-division UFC champion briefly discussed his condition following the surgery. Although the full extent of the injury has not been disclosed, McGregor definitely suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a recovery from which typically takes 9 to 12 months before he could potentially return to competition.

"The surgery went great! I’m confident," McGregor wrote on Instagram.

McGregor injured his knee while landing his first strike in his rematch with Max Holloway at UFC 329.

The Irish star started the fight with a spinning back kick, after which he landed awkwardly on his leg. Although he tried to continue the fight, McGregor’s knee wouldn’t let him, and the referee was forced to stop the fight just 66 seconds into the first round.

After a five-year hiatus due to a broken leg he sustained in his previous UFC fight, McGregor’s return ended almost as quickly as it began.

McGregor had previously undergone ACL surgery after suffering the same injury in his first fight against Holloway in 2013. At that time, McGregor was able to continue the fight and ultimately won by unanimous decision, after which he underwent surgery to repair his injured knee.

This time, the injury occurred in his other leg, but McGregor will still have to spend a long time away from competition due to the recovery process.

At the same time, McGregor has stated that he intends to return within a year and has already set his sights on UFC International Fight Week in 2027 as a possible date for his return. McGregor has one fight remaining on his current contract with the UFC, and he has made it clear that he plans to fight that final bout before potentially exploring opportunities outside the Octagon.
