Liverpool legend Barnes opens up about his battle with a serious illness — The Mirror
Former Liverpool and England national team soccer player John Barnes has revealed that he was previously diagnosed with prostate cancer.
According to the 62-year-old former player, he underwent surgery to remove his prostate and kept his diagnosis private for a long time.
“I had prostate cancer, and my prostate was removed. Not many people know about this, and it’s a bit of a taboo subject,” Barnes said.
He emphasized the importance of regular checkups and urged men not to be shy about seeking medical help. Barnes noted that many men avoid treatment out of fear of losing their sense of masculinity, but this has nothing to do with reality.
“You remain the same man, the same person. The main thing is that you’re alive, and that’s what matters most,” he added.
John Barnes played for Liverpool from 1987 to 1997. During that time, he played in 407 matches and scored 108 goals. He also has 79 appearances and 11 goals for the England national team.
