Marie-Louise Etta took charge of Berlin's Union and set a historic record

The German soccer club Union Berlin has officially announced the appointment of Marie-Louise Ett as interim head coach.

This decision is unprecedented in German soccer, as she has become the first woman in history to lead a men’s team in the Bundesliga.

According to a statement from the Berlin club’s press office, the agreement with the coach is set to run until the end of the current season.

Prior to this appointment, the 34-year-old Eta had been working at Union for a year as an assistant head coach.

Marie-Louise Ett’s athletic career is closely tied to German soccer, where she enjoyed a successful playing career. In the past, she played for such renowned clubs as Turbine, Hamburg, and Werder Bremen.

Currently, the new coach faces the difficult task of improving the team’s standing in the league. After 29 rounds of the German championship, Union has 32 points and is in 11th place in the standings.

Alongside club news, the global soccer community is preparing for the main event of 2026.

All participants and group compositions for the upcoming World Cup have been announced, with the German national team placed in Group E alongside Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.

The tournament will be held under a revised format that allows for the participation of a large number of national teams.

Teams finishing in the top two spots, as well as the eight best third-place finishers, will advance to the Round of 16.
