The IOC has responded to the EU sanctions against the head of the Russian Olympic Committee
On July 31, the International Olympic Committee commented on the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions against Mikhail Degtyarev, president of the Russian Olympic Committee. The IOC noted that it is closely monitoring the situation, while emphasizing its independence from the political decisions of individual states and international organizations.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) responded to a request from Glavkom regarding its reaction to the EU sanctions against Russian Sports Minister and President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Mikhail Degtyarev.
“The IOC has taken note of the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Mr. Degtyarev. However, these sanctions do not affect the working relationship between the IOC and the Russian Olympic Committee,” the IOC’s response states.
As previously reported, the European Union added key Russian sports officials—Mikhail Degtyarev and Arkady Dvorkovich—to its sanctions list.
“The EU sanctions package is a principled decision and a direct result of our joint, systematic work with diplomats and
European partners. I would also like to thank the President of Ukraine for his leadership in the sanctions effort.
Supporting and justifying Russian aggression is incompatible with membership in the international sports community. All the evidence we provided regarding the involvement of the individuals listed in promoting the war and supporting armed aggression against Ukraine has proven effective. We see that, under the pressure of sanctions, Dvorkovich has resigned as head of the International Chess Federation. This is an important precedent and the beginning of the restoration of justice in global sports.
