MTN Ghana expands Savannahfest to 16 teams — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, MTN Ghana has expanded the football tournament held as part of the annual Savannahfest festival: this year, 16 teams from communities in the Northern Region are taking part. Last year, four teams competed, MyJoyOnline reports.
Footballer development
MTN Ghana's Northern Region sales manager, Richard Asamani, said the expansion of the tournament is intended to promote community unity as well as identify and develop promising footballers. According to him, football was chosen as the central part of Savannahfest because of its popularity in Ghana and its ability to bring people together.
Asamani noted that the 16 teams are competing for the top prize this year. He also said the tournament gives young players an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, develop their skills, and seek opportunities to play beyond their own communities.

Festival program
The football gala tournament is part of Savannahfest, an annual festival through which MTN Ghana engages with communities in northern Ghana where the company operates. This year's festival also coincides with MTN Ghana's 30th anniversary.
The Savannahfest program includes a music festival at the Modern City Hotel, a health walk, free medical screening at Jubilee Park, and a cleanup at Tamale Teaching Hospital. Asamani positively assessed the standard of play in the opening matches, calling it evidence of football talent at the local level.
