Spanish Aprilia rider Jorge Martin won the MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix sprint race in Spielberg on September 19 and regained the championship lead. He started from pole position and, after the victory, has 286 points — three more than compatriot Marc Marquez ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring. Battle at the start
In the opening corners, Martin battled reigning champion Marquez, who rides for Ducati. The Aprilia rider was forced to defend, ran wide through a corner and dropped to eighth place on the first lap.
Pedro Acosta of KTM then took the lead. He pulled almost three seconds clear of the chasers, but crashed and retired from the race around three laps before the finish.

Martin’s comeback
Martin regained positions over the course of the race and finished first to claim his 20th sprint race victory. Marquez took second place, while another Aprilia rider, Marco Bezzecchi, finished third and holds third place in the overall standings.
Martin is the 2024 MotoGP champion. The main Austrian Grand Prix race will take place on Sunday.
