At the 2026 World Cup, for the first time in 72 years, a player was older than his national team's coach
The match between Germany and Curaçao at the 2026 FIFA World Cup marked a unique historical occurrence. For the first time since 1954 at the World Cup, a player on one of the teams was older than his national team’s head coach. This situation became one of the most interesting statistical highlights of the current tournament.
The German national team defeated Curaçao 7-1 in a group stage match of the World Cup.
In that match, the head coach of the German national team was Julian Nagelsmann, born in 1987, while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, born in 1986, took the field.
Thus, for the first time since 1954, a player was older than his team’s head coach at the World Cup. A similar situation occurred 72 years ago in the Czechoslovakia–Uruguay match, when Jaroslav Ceip (born in 1924) sent Karel Reimann (born in 1921) onto the field.
