Norway has called on FIFA to revoke the Peace Prize previously awarded to Trump

Norway has called on FIFA to revoke the Peace Prize previously awarded to Trump

Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Association, has called on FIFA to abolish the Peace Prize to prevent football from becoming entangled in high-level politics. In her view, such awards go beyond the organization’s mandate and should remain the purview of specialized institutions.

This was reported by Reuters.

The statement came amid a scandal surrounding the first presentation of the award to U.S. President Donald Trump during the 2026 World Cup draw. In the soccer community, Gianni Infantino’s move was perceived as a political tool, since the U.S. is one of the host countries of the upcoming tournament. Klaveness emphasized that FIFA lacks transparent criteria and expertise to determine the winners of such awards.

The organization FairSquare has already filed a complaint against Infantino for violating the code of ethics regarding political impartiality, which Norway has supported. Klaveness insists on a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the awarding of the prize to Trump and the publication of its findings. The head of Norwegian soccer believes that the sport should focus on its own objectives, rather than on questionable games that damage its reputation amid global instability caused by the actions of aggressors, particularly Russia.

FIFA announced the creation of the Peace Prize—a special award that will honor people who have made outstanding contributions to strengthening peace and unity in the world—just after the Nobel Committee passed over Trump for its own peace prize.
