Olympic champion Liu Xiang leaves China’s state sports system
In Shanghai, China, former Olympic champion Liu Xiang ended his employment relationship with the city sports bureau and chose independent employment. As ECNS reports, the Shanghai Sports Bureau confirmed that the athlete voluntarily agreed to economic compensation of 494,000 yuan, or $73,200.
Formalizing the transition
According to the bureau, on September 1, Liu Xiang submitted an application to transition to independent employment and signed the relevant agreement. Most of the personnel transfer procedures were completed by September 7.

The bureau said it had discussed various options for further work with the former champion. He was offered positions at an athletics center, as a technical director, or work at sports universities. Ultimately, Liu Xiang chose an independent career, and the bureau said it fully respects his decision.
Donation after landslides
The 43-year-old Liu Xiang said in a Weibo post that on September 1 he completed the procedure to end his employment relationship and received 494,000 yuan in compensation. He also said that he donated 982,935 yuan in salary and subsidies received since April 7, 2015, when he ended his sports career. The funds were transferred to the China Charity Federation to assist people affected by landslides in the Xizang Autonomous Region in southwestern China.
