South Korea wins two silvers in canoe sprint at Asian Games — Korea Herald

South Korea’s national team won two silver medals in kayak canoe sprint at the Asian Games in Japan. Jang Sang-won finished second in the men’s 500-meter kayak single final, while Choi Min-gyu and Song Min-ju came second in the mixed double event over the same distance.

Jang Sang-won’s silver

In the 500-meter K1 final, Jang Sang-won covered the distance in 1 minute 44.433 seconds at the Miyoshi Lake rowing channel near Nagoya. He lost by 0.791 seconds to Uzbekistan’s Shakhriyor Makhkamov, who finished with a time of 1:43.642. Dmitriy Kholmogorov of Kazakhstan won the bronze medal with 1:44.453.

After the first 250 meters, the Korean athlete moved into the lead with the best intermediate time of 48.77 seconds, but was unable to retain first place until the finish. This is his second medal at the Games: he previously won gold as part of the men’s 500-meter four-person crew.

Mixed double finish

In the mixed double competition, Choi Min-gyu and Song Min-ju posted a time of 1:40.349. They lost by 0.905 seconds to the Chinese crew of Li Chenhao and Zhang Luxi. Japan’s Rin Fukuda and Akihiro Inoue finished third with a time of 1:40.720.

After the first 250 meters, the Korean duo was in second place behind Kazakhstan’s representatives but could not move ahead. The Chinese crew made a late surge in the race and climbed from fifth place to first. As Korea Herald reports, South Korea’s national team concluded the canoe sprint events with two gold and two silver medals.
