Legendary West Ham goalkeeper who turned down treatment to keep playing has died
Luděk Mikloško, a former Czech goalkeeper and coach of London’s “West Ham,” died at the age of 65. The athlete had been battling cancer and had previously declined chemotherapy in an effort to continue working in soccer.
Miklosko joined West Ham in January 1990, where he earned great popularity among fans and was named Player of the Season in 1991. During his career in the English Premier League, he played in 169 matches, conceding 216 goals and recording 48 shutouts.
After retiring as a player at QPR, he worked as a goalkeeper coach at West Ham, and since 2022 has been part of the management team at the Czech club Baník. At the international level, the goalkeeper played 42 matches for the Czechoslovakian and Czech national teams and participated in the 1990 World Cup.
