In the US, Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer apologizes for NBA sanctions

In the United States, Los Angeles Clippers NBA club owner Steve Ballmer apologized to fans, team employees and other league club owners after sanctions were imposed on the team. In a statement on social network X, he called the situation a difficult time and said the case had caused distraction and concern.

As CNBC Top News reports, the NBA imposed sanctions on the Clippers for violating league rules on circumventing salary cap restrictions. According to the league, they are connected to the team's star player Kawhi Leonard and four companies that did business with the club.

Fine and draft picks

The Clippers must pay a $30 million fine, the largest in NBA history. The team will also lose five first-round draft picks, one each year starting in 2029.

Ballmer said the club is complying with the imposed penalties, has already paid the fines and is moving forward. He added that disagreements over the report's conclusions still exist, but he does not want to focus on them. According to him, team owners should support rather than distract.

Positions of the club and player

When the NBA announced the sanctions, the Clippers firmly rejected the league's conclusions and said they intended to challenge the report. The club called the investigation biased and said that, in its view, it was intended to confirm a predetermined conclusion rather than rely on facts and evidence.

The NBA said Ballmer knowingly tried to help Leonard receive millions of dollars in off-court income and committed other violations. Leonard, for his part, said he was unaware of anyone's intention to circumvent salary cap restrictions. Ballmer also said the club would continue building the team and investing in the local community.
