The president of the EuroLeague has issued a statement regarding the return of Russian clubs
Deyan Bodiroga, president of the EuroLeague, commented on the possibility of teams from the Russian Federation returning to compete in Europe’s most prestigious basketball tournament.
During a conversation with journalists, the head of the organization offered a rather restrained and cautious assessment of the current situation, without specifying any concrete deadlines or conditions for lifting the existing restrictions.
At present, the league’s leadership’s position remains unchanged, and representatives of the aggressor country continue to be excluded from international competitions.
Russian teams have been completely barred from participating in the EuroLeague since 2022 due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“We are keeping an eye on the situation and monitoring what is happening. But that is all we can say at this time,” Bodiroga stated in response to questions from journalists.
At the same time, the sports official effectively avoided giving a direct answer regarding the future of Russian basketball on the European stage.
Despite the current sanctions and the official suspension of teams, the league’s head continues to maintain contact with representatives of sports organizations involved in the conflict.
A few days ago, Bodiroga personally visited Russia and attended a game between Moscow’s CSKA and Krasnodar’s Lokomotiv-Kuban.
This visit caused a significant stir in the sports community, but no official decisions were made as a result.
