President Mahama says young footballers are leaving Ghana’s local league
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said that the early departure of promising footballers from the domestic championship is gradually weakening local football. He said this on September 8, 2026, during a meeting at Jubilee House with the teams Nations FC, Medeama SC and Ampem Dakoa Ladies, MyJoyOnline reports.
Loss of talent
According to Mahama, players are being sold too quickly: as soon as a footballer shows promise, scouts notice him and take him from the local league. In the president’s view, this trend is lowering the standard of Ghana’s domestic championship.
He noted that the country is losing young talent too early, so opportunities should be sought to keep them in the national league for longer.

Experience with the national team
Mahama also suggested giving promising players the opportunity to play for the national team. In his view, this would help them gain experience of playing at the international level.
The president believes that after such a stage, footballers will be able to reach a more mature level of development before attracting the attention of international or local scouts and receiving the opportunity to continue their careers abroad.
