Legendary American tennis players Serena and Venus Williams are returning to the court as a duo. The organizers of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati have granted the sisters a wild card to compete in doubles.
This was announced in the Cincinnati Open tournament announcement.
The tournament in Cincinnati will take place from August 11 to 23. This will be the legendary sisters’ first appearance in the doubles draw since the 2022 US Open.
The Williams sisters had previously planned to play together at Wimbledon in July, but 44-year-old Serena suffered a knee injury during her singles comeback match against Australia’s Maya Joint.
The tournament in Ohio could serve as a preparatory step for Serena ahead of her return to this year’s US Open. As a reminder, Serena fell just one step short of a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam singles title.
In addition to the doubles tournament, 46-year-old Venus Williams also received a wild card into the main singles draw of the Cincinnati Open. Together, the Williams sisters have formed one of the most successful duos in tennis history.
Over their long careers on the Tour, the sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together and have also claimed three Olympic gold medals for Team USA.
