Spain has called for the 2030 World Cup not to be co-hosted with Morocco
Spain may reconsider its participation in co-hosting the 2030 World Cup with Morocco. This decision comes in the wake of events in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, which last week found itself at the center of a major migration crisis.
According to the publication, the Sumar parliamentary group has introduced a legislative initiative in the Spanish Congress calling for Spain to withdraw from co-hosting the World Cup with Morocco.
The initiators cite the events in Ceuta, where tens of thousands of undocumented migrants from Morocco flooded in last week, as the basis for their position. This led to widespread public disorder and exacerbated the political situation.
At the same time, Spain accuses Morocco of facilitating the mass border crossing by undocumented migrants, which has become one of the main factors in the current crisis.
As a reminder, the 2030 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Meanwhile, the tournament’s opening matches are set to take place in South American countries.
