Serena Williams explained her return to professional tennis

Legendary 44-year-old American tennis player and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is returning to professional tennis. The former world No. 1, who hasn’t played competitively since the 2022 US Open, has received a wild card to compete in the doubles draw at the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament in London, which begins on June 8. 

The tennis player admitted that she isn’t setting any specific athletic goals for herself, since she has already won more than most people do in a lifetime and has nothing left to prove. She cited her desire to play in front of her children as the main reason for her return. 

Her eldest daughter, Olympia, born in 2017, has already seen her mom on the court, but her younger daughter, Adira, born in 2023, has never seen her mother play in an official match. Williams also added that she will need more training to return to singles, but for now, in addition to the competition in London, she has already signed a contract to play doubles at the tournament in Berlin.
