An athlete's death during training resulted in a hefty fine for UK Athletics
The British Athletics Federation was fined hundreds of thousands of dollars following the 2017 tragedy in which Paralympian Abdullah Hayai died during training. The court found that the incident occurred due to serious and avoidable safety violations.
Nearly eight years after the tragic death of Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayai in London, a British court has brought closure to a case that shook the sports community. The British Athletics Federation was fined $471,000, having been found responsible for gross violations of safety requirements during the organization of the training process.
The tragedy occurred in 2017 at the Newham Leisure Centre, where the athlete from the United Arab Emirates was preparing for the World Para Athletics Championships. During training, a metal javelin cage fell on the athlete, and the resulting injuries proved fatal—36-year-old Abdullah Khayai died on the spot. “The Paralympian’s horrific death was the result of serious design flaws in the equipment,” according to the investigation conducted by the police and the occupational safety agency.
The investigation found that the discus cage was missing critical stabilizing elements, making the structure unsafe for use. According to experts, this is precisely what led to the fatal collapse during training.
During the court proceedings, UK Athletics pleaded guilty to manslaughter and agreed to pay a fine and additional legal costs. Separately, Keith Davis, the head of the sports department for the 2017 World Championships, was held accountable and ordered to perform 175 hours of community service.
Representatives of the UK Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided if the organizers had followed basic safety rules. The association itself expressed condolences to the athlete’s family and stated that it had learned its lesson and strengthened oversight of sports infrastructure to ensure that nothing like this happens again.
