Svitolina defeated her Russian opponent in a dramatic match and advanced to the semifinals in Toronto
On August 11, Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Katerina Aleksandrova in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and advanced to the semifinals. The Ukrainian lost the first set but staged a comeback to win the match in three sets—3–6, 6–0, 6–3.

In the first set, the Russian took the initiative. With the score at 2–2, she broke serve and went on to win the first set 6–3.
However, Svitolina managed to turn the match around. First, she dominated the Russian in the second set, winning 6-0.
In the decisive third set, Elina immediately broke serve and took the lead—2–0. Ultimately, the Ukrainian won the set 6–3.
Svitolina will face Poland’s Iga Świątek, the world’s No. 8-ranked player, in her next match.
Earlier, world champion in ski jumping Mattia Furlan was injured and withdrew from the European Championships.
