A Russian tennis player suffered a nervous breakdown after being eliminated from Wimbledon

Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva, competing under neutral status, unexpectedly saw her run at Wimbledon come to an end in the second round. The athlete, who was considered one of the favorites at the grass-court Grand Slam, lost to the tournament’s defending champion, Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic, in a three-set match with a score of 6–4, 5–7, 4–6.

In the decisive set, Andreeva saved six match points on her opponent’s serve but was unable to turn the tide of the match; she then lost control of her emotions on the court, throwing her racket and breaking down in tears at the net.

Her emotional outburst continued during her conversation with journalists at the press conference. When asked about her loss, the tennis player covered her face with her hands and burst into tears, prompting the organizers to suggest she take a break. She later apologized to those present and noted that she plans to discuss her upcoming schedule and preparations for the hard-court season with her team after a few days of rest. This elimination made history for the tournament, as it was the first time since 2010 that both Roland Garros finalists failed to advance past the second round at the following Wimbledon.
