Puerto Rican boxer Pritchard Colón died at the age of 33
Puerto Rican boxer Pritchard Colón has died at the age of 33. The athlete had been in a vegetative state for nearly ten years following his 2015 bout with Terrell Williams, after which he lost the ability to walk or speak on his own.
Colón was an undefeated professional boxer who competed in the welterweight division. He fought his last bout in October 2015 against American Terrell Williams, who repeatedly landed illegal blows to the back of his head. In the locker room, Colón’s condition deteriorated, causing him to lose consciousness. He was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery to remove a subdural hematoma, after which he remained in a coma for 221 days.
After emerging from the coma, Colón remained confined to a wheelchair and was in a vegetative state. He completely lost the ability to walk or speak on his own, but was able to communicate partially using a special computer and gestures.
Prior to his fight against Williams, Colon had 16 wins and no losses.
