The UAF did not renew its contract with youth national team coach Unai Melgosa
The Ukrainian Football Association has decided not to renew the contract of Unai Melgosa, head coach of the Ukrainian U-21 national team. The Spanish coach’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026.
Melgosa took over the U-21 team in July 2023 and worked alongside Serhiy Rebrov within the national team’s coaching staff. Under his leadership, the team qualified for Euro 2025 but was eliminated in the group stage.
In total, the youth national team played 29 matches under the Spaniard’s leadership, recording 13 wins, 5 draws, and 11 losses.
The changes to the coaching staff are taking place amid the Euro 2027 qualifiers. After six rounds, Ukraine is in third place in its group with 8 points. Croatia and Turkey are ahead of them.
According to the UAF, the youth team will soon have a new head coach, and a Ukrainian specialist is said to be the leading candidate for the position.
