Ukrainian track and field athletes Levchenko and Gerashchenko faced off and won two medals
Ukrainian track and field athletes Yulia Levchenko and Iryna Herashchenko won medals at the first event of the new Diamond League season.
This was reported by Suspilne.
The competition kicked off in Xiamen, China, where ten athletes competed in the women’s high jump, including two representatives from Ukraine. For Levchenko and Gerashchenko, this was their first event of the summer competition season.
For Levchenko, it was her first start of the season following her silver medal at the World Indoor Championships. For Gerashchenko, however, the event in Xiamen was her first Diamond League competition since 2024—she had missed the entire previous season due to pregnancy and the birth of her child.
The Ukrainian athletes cleared the first four heights without any extra attempts, the last of which was 1.91 meters. Besides the Ukrainians, only Jamaican Lamari Disten and Australian Eleanor Patterson cleared all the heights on their first attempt.
Levchenko cleared 1.94 meters on her first attempt, while Gerashchenko cleared it on her second. Thanks to this, Gerashchenko achieved her best result since competing at the 2024 Olympic Games, where she cleared 1.95 meters.
At 1.97 meters, Gerashchenko cleared the bar on her second attempt, further improving her season’s best. Levchenko cleared the bar on her third attempt and became the second athlete in the field to do so.
Thus, Gerashchenko and Levchenko engaged in a head-to-head duel for the gold at the 1.99-meter bar. And on her final attempt, Levchenko snatched the victory from Gerashchenko—she cleared that height, after which she ended her competition in the event!
As a reminder, Ukrainian tennis player Angelina Kalinina lost in the final of the WTA 250 tournament held in Rabat on May 23. In the decisive match, she was unable to successfully complete the game against Croatian athlete Petra Marcinko.
Donetsk’s “Shakhtar” has officially signed Venezuelan winger Gleyker Mendoza from “Kryvbas,” who was one of the top scorers in the UPL. The contract is long-term and is already generating significant interest due to the player’s form.
The Ukrainian men’s and women’s national volleyball teams played exhibition matches ahead of the start of the Nations League and both suffered defeats. The teams tested their form and lineups in matches against strong opponents as they prepared for the official games of the season.
