Jorge Jesus may take over as head coach of the Portuguese national team after the 2026 World Cup

Following Roberto Martínez’s resignation, 71-year-old Jorge Jesus is being touted as the leading candidate to take over as head coach of the Portuguese national team. The experienced Portuguese coach, who recently worked with Cristiano Ronaldo at the club level, could take the helm of the national team after the 2026 World Cup.

This was reported by insider Fabrizio Romano.

According to the source, the experienced coach has already agreed to take the helm of the national team.

The insider noted that under the current development plan for the Portuguese national team, Jesus is expected to coach the team during the qualifying rounds for Euro 2028 and, subsequently, for the 2030 World Cup.

“This season, he won the Saudi Pro League title with Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo,
” Romano added.

It should be noted that the Riyadh-based club was Jorge Jesus’s previous employer. There, during the 2025–26 season, he coached Portugal’s star player as well as midfielder João Félix.
