A 756-meter-wide potentially hazardous asteroid is approaching Earth
On August 9, asteroid 173561 (2000 YV137)—classified by NASA as a potentially hazardous asteroid—will pass near Earth. The celestial object is 756 meters long, and its closest approach to Earth will be more than 5 million kilometers.
According to NASA’s criteria, asteroids that come within 7.5 million kilometers of Earth and are larger than 150 meters are considered potentially hazardous. Asteroid 173561 (2000 YV137) meets both of these criteria.
Despite its status as a potentially hazardous asteroid, there is no risk of a collision with Earth during this flyby.
