Andreessen Horowitz creates $1.1 billion Machine Age fund
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z, has raised $1.1 billion for its new Machine Age fund. The fund will invest in hardware and infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence, TechCrunch reports.
Investments in AI infrastructure
a16z said the fund’s goal is to accelerate the physical deployment of AI. Its investments will cover components and systems that enable artificial intelligence to operate: computer chips, memory, data centers, and robots.
The company, which has typically focused heavily on scaling software, now plans to direct more funds toward technology hardware. In a post, a16z noted the need for faster and more efficient systems, more affordable memory with higher bandwidth, as well as faster and more scalable connections between nodes and systems.

Hardware, energy, and cooling
The fund will also focus on energy-efficient edge devices that will enable AI to interact with the surrounding world. Among the areas needed for this, a16z named cooling systems, materials, electrical infrastructure, and real estate.
The company called artificial intelligence the most powerful tool for solving problems and ensuring abundance, describing its development as a social and national imperative.
