A photograph of Mars taken by NASA’s Spirit rover back in 2007 is gaining popularity online once again. Users have noticed a dark silhouette that resembles a person walking across the surface of the Red Planet.
In the panoramic image of the Martian landscape, some users spotted a figure resembling a human with outstretched arms and one leg extended forward.
Others proposed an alternative explanation, suggesting that it might be a human-like statue kneeling on the ground rather than a living creature.
At the same time, most commenters tend to believe that the mysterious silhouette is an unusually shaped rock, even though there are no other similar formations nearby.
The photograph was taken by NASA’s Spirit rover, which had been operating on Mars since 2004.
In 2009, the rover became stuck in the sand, and after losing contact due to depleted batteries, the mission was officially ended in 2011.
Experts from the Planetary Science Society emphasize that the mysterious figure is an example of pareidolia—a psychological phenomenon in which a person sees familiar images in random shapes.
According to scientists, almost anyone could perceive this rock as a human-like silhouette, although in reality it is merely a feature of the terrain.
Scientists also point out that the Martian landscape was shaped over billions of years by volcanic activity, meteorite impacts, and wind erosion. It is precisely these processes that can create rock formations that appear man-made.
NASA emphasizes that, as of today, no evidence has been found to confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life on Mars, nor is there any convincing evidence that such life existed there in the past.
Similar photographs have repeatedly sparked sensational claims about alleged alien artifacts, but such “discoveries” have subsequently been explained by the phenomenon of pareidolia.

Recently, NASA’s Curiosity rover transmitted new images from Mars that impressed scientists with their unusual geological structures. While exploring the “Valle Grande” valley, the rover documented the largest known cluster of polygonal fractures, which had not previously been observed on the Red Planet on such a scale.
Earlier, the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Mars Express orbiter sent back new photographs of the Martian surface showing “metallic” waves inside the massive Kaiser Crater.
Scientists have previously noted that our planet differs from others in the Solar System. This applies not only to the gas giants but also to our neighboring rocky celestial bodies. For example, just like on Earth, solar eclipses occur on Mars.
And a group of scientists from the University of Warwick, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Microgravity Center in Germany, has achieved a breakthrough in the creation of light-driven energy, which could be the key to the future colonization of Mars.
By the end of the decade, NASA plans to establish a lunar outpost on Mars. This must be accomplished before humans begin exploring the planet.
