How millions of Pokémon Go players helped build a unique dataset for artificial intelligence

Over 143 million Pokémon Go players have long believed they were simply catching Pokémon, but in reality, they have been generating an enormous dataset about the real world. Over eight years, Niantic collected more than 30 billion images capturing landmarks, stores, parks, and streets from various angles and under different weather and lighting conditions.

These images are now used to train visual navigation systems for delivery robots, enabling them to navigate city streets without relying on GPS. Players unwittingly contributed one of the largest datasets in AI history through their gameplay.

Niantic is the developer behind Pokémon Go, one of the most popular mobile games that combines virtual and augmented reality with the real world.

Niantic’s achievement in creating this massive AI dataset opens new avenues for autonomous robotic systems and enhances their functionality in everyday environments.

This development is expected to improve robotic delivery accuracy and reliability, further advancing intelligent urban systems and automation.
